Prom Night: What Would You Have Done Differently?

I still remember picking up my invitation to my secondary school prom.  Although it was an all-girls secondary school, they allowed us to have prom. A real one, with clothes, music, and of course ... boys.

The boys came in all shapes and sizes.  Girls brought their boyfriends, cousins, brothers, houseboys, family friends ... as long as the other person had a Y chromosome, he was qualified to be a prom date.

One of the major things girls fussed about was the prom dress. I mean, they went crazy looking for the perfect dress.  Some girls (de ones wey get money) travelled abroad or got people traveling abroad to buy them prom dresses.  Others who were not so inclined went to the local boutiques (a good number of the ones on Adeniran Ogunsanya street in Surulere) in search of the elusive 'perfect' dress.

Eventually, the D-day came and some of the boutique-shoppers discovered to their horror that the N 10, 000 naira dress (it was a lot of money to blow on one dress in those days) they had bought was the same N 10, 000 naira dress some other girls had bought.  In short, there were many 'twins' on that day ... as in girls wearing the same dress, give or take different colors.  At the end of the day, prom night was a lot of fun, regardless of what you wore.

But things are different today.  Back then, it was almost unthinkable that anyone would be looking for a tailor to sew a prom dress.  It had to be 'ready-made.'

Today, people buy fabrics and take them to tailors to make wedding gowns, aso-ebi outfits and even prom dresses.

If I could do it all over again, I would not worry about my dress.  I would simply pick a nice style and give it to the tailor.  End of story.  That way, I would be able to wear the same outfit to other events.

So, did you attend your school's prom night?  If you could change anything about that night, what would it be?
